MAITRI Club 1st Dana Project

HAPPINESS CENTRE FOR THE MENTALLY DISABLED CHILDREN, Pusat Kanak-kanak Terencat Akal Bahagia
2nd March 2008

A word from the Founder…
I am very happy that we have all agreed to perform dana at Pusat Kanak-kanak Terencat Akal Bahagia in Klebang Kecil, Melaka. I can feel that those who have participated was more than happy and satisfied. It is a different feeling this time because all this while our dana was focused at the welfare of Buddhist temple and its activities.
But this time after seeing those children living in the centre, I have to admit our donations was for a very good cause because the children needs it.

Buddha have advised us, for a dana to be effective it must be performed to a virtuous person like Buddha himself or his virtuous followers. Mr. Roy Collar, the founder of this charity home, has taken a bold step in life that not many will have the strength and courage to follow. He started this charity home 8years ago taking care of 35 mentally challenged children. Mr. Roy didn’t just run the home, he ran it very well, both the children and the centre is very clean and tidy. Therefore in Buddha’s context of a virtuous person, Mr. Roy Collar fits the bill ! Such dana when performed is very effective in improving one’s Karma.

HAPPINESS CENTRE is run on a 24 hour basis and is a home to 35 children, with severe and multiple disabilities. Their ages range from 4 years to 35 years, and most of them come from single-parent homes or very poor backgrounds. Some of them are also abandoned cases and as such, they are not able to subsidize their up-keep. This centre was established in July 2000 by Mr. Roy Collar, PJK, to cater to the low-income families who have no money to send their less-abled children to paying centres.

A Home To Call Their Own. Speech by Roy Collar, Founder of Happiness Centre

Happiness Centre for the Mentally Disabled Children is a brainchild of mine and my desire to fulfill a dream of taking care of the less privileged members of our society.
My name is Roy Collar, the Founder of this special home, and am a Portuguese from Portuguese Settlement, Melaka. I had learned about caring and sharing through my difficult childhood and I had learned to care for the elderly, massage their limbs and administer simple medical treatments. This had helped me now in caring for my special children at Happiness Centre. This special home was opened in July 2000 with 4 disabled children from very poor backgrounds, and now we are bursting at the seems with 35 children with multiple and severe disabilities. All of them need 24 hour care and special nursing skills. I take in children of all races and religion is not an issue. For me all children and especially special ones like these are God’s gift to us, to try to make their lives brighter and at least a little bit more comfortable.
I open my doors to children who are abandoned, or come from single-parent homes and or from very poor backgrounds. This is because I do not charge them a monthly fee. They are brought here with no obligations to pay for their up-keep.
